The Ashley may be expected to return to "Napier on Saturday next, with the English June Mail, and is announced to steam for Auckland phortly after arrival. Wellington Shipping Summary. We take the follpwing summary of the month's shipping from 'he Independent of the sth : The past month has been an un-eventful one, pnd although it is considered one of the darkest pf the winter mouths, yet the weather here has been very equable. The principal eyent in marine interests is the present agitation going on amonght the shareholders of the N.Z.S.Nf Company, whether it shall jje carried on or sold to the pioprietors of the Circular Saw Line, the preliminaries of which negotiation have appeared 'in previous summaries. The shares of the Company represent two interests jyhich though once in unison are now diametrically Opposed, They are the large and small shareholders. The former wish to withdraw what they fgg of fbj krg» ituip of d*ad mooey they i have, j

invested ia the eoneera, so as to employ it to'soraej more profitable purpose. The investmeuts of the! smaller shareholders is a matter of less moment to them, and they therefore prefer clinging to the property ia the hope of getting a higher price or that times will improve. A very large meeting of shareholders was held on the 13th ult., for the purpose of considering the conditional arrangements between Mr Martin and the Directors of the Company, and it was moved by the Chairman ex officio that the offer be accepted and the company wound up forthwith"; Several influential shareholders spoke pro and con, and a poll was demanded. The following wast lie result:—For persons, representing 2676 shares and 1181 votes; against —77 persons, 991 shares and 629 votes. As the majority was not. a three-fourth one, the motion was lost. Since then controversial letters have appeared in print between some of the directors and Mr Taylor. 'I lie matter will probably be settled by the Legislature cither by altering the present voting power or by allowing the company to pay d vidends out of a reduced capital.

The next engrossing topic of shipping interest is the raising of the Taranaki. The company ought now, according to all accounts, to be near the fruition of their hopes. In our last issue we published a telegram stating that the deep-sea liooks were, all made fast. All the pontoons have been at the wreck some time, and the operation of raising was to commence as soon as that was done. Owners of goods are apprised by advertisement to be in readiness.

It is rare for a month to pas without some one of the steamers on the .coast being under repairs. This month it was the Wanganui Company's s.s. Wanganui. Mr Mills, of the Lion Foundry, bestowed a fortnight's work on her. The last time, her repairs were effected iu Sydney. Some repairs were effected to the Lord Ashley lately in Auckland.

H.M.S. Challenger has been in our harbor during the past month, with the exception of a short trip up Queen Charlotte's Souud. from disasters we have beeu exempt, and even Hokitika, once so fatal to vessels, records but one wreck this month. That was the steamer Bruce, a boat that had run so many narrow escapes as to be considered exempt from the dangers of ordinary vessels. Our arrivals and departures of foreign-going vessels are marked by units. Miscellaneous.

The weather since our last has been fine, but strong wiuds, principally from the westward, have prevailed. Tl»e cutter Glimpse for the coast, the ketch Emerald for Picton, and the brigantine Esther for Wellington, all took their departure yesterday forenoon.

The ketch Angelina will leave for Pelorus Sound in a day or two. The s.s. Rangatira is due here from Auckland on Sunday next, and will steam for Welliugton and Southern Ports ou Monday.

The s.s. Wellington, from Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin, due here on Monday next, 16th inst., will steam for Auckland on Tuesday. The s.s. Rangitoto, from Melbourne, with the English June Mail, arrived olf Hokitika at 2.30 p.m. on Monday last (two days before she was due), but for the third time in succession was not able to land her mails on account of the heavy sea ou the bar. She, therefore, left Hokitika late the same night, and arrived at Welliugton at 7.45 p.m. on Tuesday. The Day Spring, from Newcastle, arrived at Wellington at 4 a.m. on Monday last. The Free Trader from llobarr, Town, arrived at Fort Chalmers at 11.30 a.m. on Monday last. The s.s. Piicebe arrived at Wellington from iSelson at 8 p.m. ou Tuesday last. The s.s. Beautiful Star left Port Chalmers for Lyttelton at 8 a.m. yesterday. 'The Laughing Waters, from Newcastle, arrived at Port Chalmers at 11 a.m. yesterday.
