OTAGO.
Our files from this province to the 7th inst., contain very little news of other than purely local interest. The Evening Slav of the 29th ult., says; —“ Mercantile matters in Dunedin are at the present time in a very dull state. This is caused by a variety of circumstances amongst which may he mentioned the intellately received in town of the discovery of gold at Marlborough. We do not assert for a moment that the rush to the neighbouring province has yet been very considerable, but the effect of the news lias been to keep business almost at a standstill until further news is received from what is believed by many to be the El Dorado of New Zealand. Humors of several commercial failures in town are afloat, amongst which ore some of an extensive character, we however refrain from publishing the names until the reports aie officially authenticated.” Tlie same journal of the 3rd inst., adds; —The continuance of the rush to the Pelorus Diggings, and the uncertainty of the existence of a field sufficiently payable for those who are leaving for it, have tended to reducing business transaction to a minimum. The Scotia is rapidly filling, and is expected to sail to-morrow.
