UNSUSTAINED CHARGE.
[PRESS ASSOCIATION.] HOKITIKA. Tuesday. John Watson ScuHy, formerly a hotelkeeper at Westport, and now a restaurant keeper in Wellington, was charged on remand at the S.M. Court to-day with supplying an instrument to au unmarried woman for an illegal purpose in June last year. Before proceeding with the case the magistrate said it was most unusual to have a case heard at Hokitika, when the alleged act took place at Westport, 100 miles away; and unless the Ciown undertook to pay the expenses of any witnesses whom tiro defendant might wish to call Ire would refuse to hear the case. After some discussion counsel for the defendant elected to allow the hearing to proceed, and evidence for thji prosecution was called. The court dismissed the information on the ground that the evidence did not disclose that the defendant (supplied or attempted (to supply the instrument.
