HASTINGS.
[OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
An inquest was held at Havelock yesterday morning on the body of a man found on the Waimarama beach. Mr Thos. Gilpin, J.P., acted as deputy coroner. Constable Carmody deposed proceeding to Waimarama, and bringing the body to Havelock. Deceased was wearing an old pair of dark tweed trousers, the hair (most of which had fallen off through the action of the sea.) was brown, and there were no teeth. The remains were those of a man about 6ft in height. The body, which must have been in the water for a fortnight at least, was six miles north of Waimarama station, near the Waipuka creek. Dr Macdoneli also gave evidence, and the inquest was adjourned till Tuesday, 19th instant, to allow the police to make further inquiries as to the identity of the deceased. The credit balance of the Hastings branch of the Farmers* Union was £5 15s 9d, not £55 15s 9d as printed yesterday.
