ALLEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER.

THE MAHARAHARA AFFAIR. IMPORTANT CORRECTION OF FIRST REPORTS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL TO HERALD] WOODVILLE, Saturday. Mr James, S.M., was occupied al Saturday morning in hearing achargS of attempted murder preferred against George England, of Maharahara. ■ ' Inspector Macdonell conducted the prosecution, and Mr Gothard appeared for the accused.

The evidence showed that the story first circulated was exaggerated, inasmuch as Mrs England and young Nicholas did not go to an entertain- - ment together. On . her return, moreover, Mrs England was accompanied by her son and neice. They were overtaken by Nicholas, and all went together to England’s house, where and when the disturbance occurred. England was committed for trial at the sittings of the Supreme Court to be held at Napier on May 2nd. Bail was refused.

[PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WOODVILLE, Saturday. The case against George England, for attempted murder of his wife and one Thomas Nicholas, was heard to-day before Mr James, SM. The evidence went to show that England had been drinking. When in drink he was jealous of his wife. He made certain accusations against her, and struck her, and Nicholas then interfered. England went and got his gun, and Mrs England, Nicholas, and the children left the house. England is alleged to have fired three shots, but did not strike any one. The accused reserved his defence and was committed for trial.
