PORANGAHAU.

[own correspondent.]

One of the most successful functions that has ever been held in this quiet township took place on the evening of the 4th instant, when the inhabitants of Porangaliau and district gave a valedictory social to Mr and Mrs Robert Hall, who have been resident in the neighbourhood for the last twentyseven years, and are leaving to lake up a farm near Eketahnna The i holding capacity of the Public Hall M was taxed to its utmost to accommo-fl date the numerous friends of the lar couple, many of whom' traveUedß from considerable distances to be sent. During the evening Mr Hunter, in a feeling speech, dressed those present, referring to length of time that he liad known Hall; the honesty of purpose and." straightforwardness that had always characterised his dealings, and. the deep regret felt hy the people of the township at the severance of ties which had *xisted so long. In concluding he handed over to Mr Hall a handsome marble clock, bearing the following inscription“ Presented to Mr and Mrs R. Hall by Porangaliau friends. January, 1904.” The clock was accompanied by' a purse of ioreirisns. The Rev. F. E. T. Sim cox returned thanks on behalf of Mr and Mrs Hall, in a speech which caused considerable amusement when he made references to different things that had happened during Mr Hall’s lengthened stay, some of the allusions being keenly relished by the audience. After the presentation had been made, the remainder of the evening was devoted to music and dancing; and before the company finally dispersed at an early hour in the morning they made the surrounding hills re-echo with hearty chores given for their departing guests A word of praise must be given to the gentlemen who devoted so ranch time and taste to the decoration of the TT.li which, it was unanimously agreed had never presented such a pretty an. nearance J
