Even when off duty a policeman cannot always enjoy that freedom from care and responsibility which falls to the lot of most men. Only a day or two ago Constable Fryer, of Melbourne, who had a few hours to himself, was taking his two youngsters for a stroll down Bourke-street, when he was most unexpectedly called upon to abandon all prospects of pleasure and return again to those duties which he had just forsaken. A man named Hay, who was trying to dispose of a piece of brass as a nugget of gold, for which he asked only tne trilling sum of seven shillings, apparently saw in the policeman a prospective buyer and, stopping him, immediately tried to strike a bargain. But, unfortunately for the vendor, his memory was defective, and he did not recognise Fryer as the man who only three months previously, and under somewhat similar conditions, had arrested him for having tried to work the same dodge. Fryer examined the piece of brass, and then scrutinised the man. “Oh, you are at your old game, are you?” ho asked, and Hay, overcome with astonishment, blurted out. “Good heavens! You are the bloke that jugged me before!” Hay was then led away weeping to the lock-up.
