OBITUARY.

LONDON, January 4. The death is announced in New York of General James Longstreet, q. notable Confederate general, in his 83rd year. CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The Hon. W. C. Walker, Speaker of the Legislative Council, died suddenly from heart disease at his residence at Port Hills about two o’clock this morning. He was in town yesterday, and though not as welt as usual intended leaving for Wellington the same evening. He was attended by Dr Symes. [The Hon. William Campbell Walker, C.M.G., who was born in 1837, was the cfdest son of the late Sir William Stuart Walker, K.C.B. He married in i 1871 Miss Margaret Wilson, daughter (' ■ of the late Archdeacon Wilson, of ,' Christchurch. He woe educated at ►f Trinity College, Oxford, taking the degree of M-A- Arriving in Canterbury in 1862,’ he was intimately associated with the settlement and development of that province, where he wbb engaged with his brother in sheepfarming pursuits for many years. From 1684 to 1800 he was member of the Honse of Representatives for Ashburton; and in 1892 he was called to the Legislative Council. He joined the Seddon Ministry in 1896, and was Minister of Education up to last year, when be was elected Speaker of the Legislative Council, in 1001 he was created a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George.
