ENGLISH PRESS COMMENTS. fßeceived December 21, 0.53 a.m.) LONDON, December 20. The “St. James’ Gazette” considers that the Labour victory is a misfortune for Australia. It is an engaging programme that every employee is to be bis own employer, but a ruinous one for Australia. The “Daily News” says the election is dead against Mr Chamberlain’s policy, to which Australia is indifferent. The “Standard” thinks that moderate men may save the situation by a coalition, though that 5s unlikely. It predicts that the Commonwealth will experience a most trying regime, and fears that the dogmas of militant and intolerant trade unionism will be applied in a drastic and # provocative form. It is significant that control should have passed to the most rabid Protectionists. Colonial preference finds hardly a kind word from Australian workers; there is no whisper of any return for offered advantages.
