TONGOIO.
An epidemic of some kind has broken out among the younger Maoris here, and in consequence the school has been closed. The matter has been brought under the notice of the Education Department. The complaint, which some say is measles or scarlatina, commenced early last week. It spread so rapidly that fourteen children were laid up before Friday, Some of the adults are now affected. An amusing incident took place hero on Saturday forenoon. Knox’s ooaoh, on the way to the races, stopped in front of an orchard near the Maori pa. Some of the passengers got down and entered the orchard. Presently a yonng Maori came tunning towards them with a gun. The party held up a white handkerchief, and the matter ended in peace. They got no fruit.—Own Cobbespohdbnt.
