CRIMINAL TRIALS.

SEVERE SENTENCES, [PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Auckland, Monday. The Supreme Court criminal sittings finished to-day. A Maori for rape, and another for attempted rape, received sentences of ten years’ imprisonment and two floggings each of 25 lashes. A third Maori concerned in the same case was found guilty of attempted criminal assault, and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment. Geo. Rudolf, a half-caste, for rape on bis daughter, was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment and two floggings of 25 lashes. Wanganui, Monday. The Supreme Court opened this morning. Mr Justice Edwards in his charge to the Grand Jury raid there was a considerable number of cases, 21 charges against 17 persons, including attempted wife murder and snioide against Joseph Temporley, manslaughter against Maher, and indecent assault against Blight. His Honor intimated that there was likely to be a plea of insanity in the murder case. The other charges are not serious. Palmerston North, Monday.

At the S.M. Court this morning Frederick Batke, who represented himself as an Imperial artilleryman and that ha had been with General Bailer on the Tugela, waa sentenced to four months’ imprisonment on five charges of false pretences.

Dunedin, Monday. The criminal sessions were opened this morning. Mr Justice Williams congratulated the Grand Jury on the lightness of the calendar. Alexander Logan, committed for sentence from Gore on a charge of forgery, was sentenced to probation for six months and ordered to pay £4 2s costs of prosecution. Hector Morrison, convicted of indecent assault on a married woman at Waikonaiti, got a sentence of twelve months’imprisonment. Lloyd Evans, for forgery at Christchurch, was admitted to probation for 12 months on condition that he paid £BO to the prosecutor and £ls towards the cost of the proieontion. William Colbontne was found guilty of stealing a bicycle and sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment. Angus M’Neil, charged with wounding Charles Anderson with intent on the schooner Isabella Anderson at the wharf, was found guilty and received a sentence of 18 months’ imprisonment. Mary Livingstone Hannah, for theft, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment.
