SPORTING.

NAPIEB PAEK RA.CING CLUB, SPRING MEETING. [Br "Fetlock."]

The Napier Park Racing Club will open their racing season to-morrow with their spring meeting, which will be continued on Wednesday. The fields are exceptionally good, and with fine weather the club should score the success deserved by its efforts in providing rich stakes to induce owners of highclass horses to compete at their meetings. For the eight events a total of 86 horses has been secured, giving an average of eleven for each, event. The fields comprise moat of the horse* seen ont last week, while winners at Otaki will also make their appearance. The course and its surroundings are looking exceptionally bright. In fact each year shows an improvement in this direction. Special trains at holiday excursion rates will run both days from Waipukurau downwards, calling at all intermediate stations. A special train will be despatched from the Napier station at 635 p m. each day after the races, conveying passengers and visitors homewards as far as Waipukurau. Wednesday will be observed as a special holiday by the banks, merchants, and legal offices, closing at 11 a.m, and the shopkeepers will close their places of business at noon. The first race is timed to start at 12.30 p.m. The refreshment booths will on both days be under the special supervision of Mr C. O’Donoghue. Messrs Cohen and Nicholson have again secured the tight of running the totalizators, and three machines will be provided for the use of the public. Mr T. Cameron, who wM wield the starter’s flag on the Napier Park course for the first time, has come into considerable prominence of late by the even manner in which he despatches his fields.

The programmo for the first day is a varied one, consisting of two hurdle events and six flat races. The race of the day will ba the newly-instituted Napier Stakes, of 250 «ov«, for 2 and 3-year-olds, with special penalties and allowancas for difference of age and winners. This race will be run for the first time to-morrow, and the club should feal satisfied with their efforts to provide a classic raoe, as 23 have paid the final sweepstake. The first race is the HACK HANDICAP HORDLES. The field consists of sis horses, from which I take the three top weights to furnish the winner, and will place them in this order—Abergeldie, Eclair, and The Gryphon. COUNTT HACK BANDICAI'. The field of eight horses have been brought well together, Aroha taking first place with Bst 111b, a weight that I fancy will stop the son of Sequah, and I prefer those below him. Wheellock, _7et_6lb,. and Waimoe, 7st, randisappOlUUUgly at* tiasitugl, kiiC T otiall oa. peot to Bee these two fight out the finish -with Mr B. J. Watt's pair Hydrant and Apprentice.

NAPIEB STAKES. There ii a most fashionable field of 2 and 3-year-olds for thig event. Several of them among both ages will have penalties to carry. The Hon. J. D. Ormond and Mestrs T. H. Lowry, H. Friedlander, L. D. and N. A. Nathan and E. J. Watt are represented by a brace eaoh, while eleven other interests are represented by a single eaoh. I fanoy the winner will CDme from the 3-year-olds, and shall saleot Porirua, with Grey Seaton and Sana Peur or Kamo to fill the places. PAP.K STAKES HANDICAP. The Shannon, Bat 131b, has the same weight bi in the King Edward Handicap, while Convoy comes next with 8«t 121b, or 61b more than when he won the Spring Handicap. Fakir, Bst 81b, has a nice handy weight, and as he was in winning form at Wanganoi hs may again tarn up tramps. Fleka, 7st 91b, is nicely handioappad, but I fancy the distance may find him ont. Kahnwai hai been on the sick list for lome time, but 7«t 91b Bhould not stop her, as she rather likes the galloping on the Park coarse. Laureate would be better over a shorter coarse, while I have no liking for Sirius or Daredevil. I shall take The Shannon to win, with Convoy and Fakir next.

SPEING WKLTKB. Of the thirteen in this event, Oingo, lOst 81b, reads well, with Murmur, 9«t 51b, Aroha, 9it 21b, and Defoe, Bst, as those most likely to be among the first three. HANDICAP HnBDLES. Three of the six acceptors are engaged in , the Haok Hurdles, consequently the field may be reduced somewhat. This event I expeot to see result in a match between Fearlihot and Cobra, and should the former run ai well as she did in the Second Hardies at Hastings she will about win. AHUKIBI HACK HANDICAP. It iB likely that the 12 acceptors will face the starter in this event. On the difference of weights I take Liquefy at 7st 91b to be the best over the distanca, with Rajah, Bounce, and Pantomime next. RAILWAY HANDICAP.

This event must prove one ol the closest contests of the day, and should result in a fine betting race. Hinetaura, Oingo, Laureate, and Ballyneety all proved winners at Hastings, while Westgnard and Eeolaimer are very fast over the distance. Camelot ran third in the Welter, and was well up in the Guineas. Meta M'Carthy ran second to Ballyneety in the October Handicap. I shall take them in this order—Westguard, Laureate, and Hinetanra.
