FATHER OF 36 CHILDREN.
A fcrashmaker named William Clarke, aged Cs, of Tottenham, who was charged at Southwark Police Court with leaving; his wife and three children destitute, pleaded that he had ‘ a very rough time of it owing to his numerous progeny. His first wife bore him sixteen children end bis second twenty.’ The Magistrate fin surprise): How many? Warrant Officer: Thirtys:i in all. The second wife says she thought her number was only eighteen, but there was so many that she was not quite sure. The prisoner adhered to the total of thirty-six as representing his family and alleged that one of his sons whom he set up in business had defrauded him. Another son was killed in South Africa. As to the remaining thirty-four, he could not say how mauy were now liring. He was ordered a month’s hard labor.
