Auckland, Thursday. The Governor arrived from Wellington to-day by the Tutanakai. He will reI main here a few days, and during that time will inspect the new auxiliary screw schooner Countess of Kanturly, which has been built for the Cook Islands trade to tho Government’s order. The proposal to borrow ,£IOO,OOO for city improvements has been agreed to by the City Council, and will be submitted to a poll of ratepayers. The City Council also decided to ask Parliament to remove the restrictions on the Council’s rating powers, Additional rating was not considered necessary to pay for the loan, but to increase the Council’s credit. Manoawbka, Thursday. At the Magistrate’s Court to day, before Mr Greenfield, S.M, H. J. Woodard, the holder of the new license recently granted at Taihape, was fined £lO and costs for selling liquor on a Sunday. Tho license was not endorsed. Wellington, Thursday. The Post-office authorities have received advice that tho mails which left Auckland per Sierra on the 15th June arrived in Loudon on the afternoon of the 17th instant, four days late, The Wellington Harbor Board at its last meeting decided to become its own insurance agent, but to-day it resolved to insure its employes in one of the accident insur.nce offices. The railway traffic returns for tho month ending June 22nd show, compared with the corresponding period last year, an increase of 214,991 passengers and £18,370 of revenue. The trouble between the captain and crow of the ship Beacon Rook as to food, culminated this morning in the men refusing duty. The shipping master of the port is to receive a deputation from the crew this afternoon.
