GOVERNOR SEDDON.

j We would very much like to know what lies behind the rumour that Sir Sodden I * 3 to he otforod a governorship. It is significant that it has originated on both occasions with u Ministerial journal—in tho first instance with the lojttellem Times, I and more recently with tho.! iiel.land S/ar. It is difficult to believe that Mr Seddon is - really contemplating such a move. Wo do not indeed suppose that ho has any doubt about his capabilities. Somebody said of George Canning, that ho waa so confident of hia powers that if ho was offered tho command of tho Channel Squadron ho would accept it without a moment's hesitation. Mr Seddon is not inclined to place a more modest estimate on his talents than the late Mr Canning. Hut wo cannot imagine him consenting to hide his light under such a bushel as the

High Commissionorahip of tho Pacific would bo. Whatever title might grace tho office Mr Sodden would have in that remote and outlandish quarter no sphere for tho exorcise of his undoubted abilities. And yet that is the suggestion of tho .star. It seems to us impossible that tho Premier should seriously consider such a proposal. A man may mako an excellent Premier and yet nrove but an indifferent Governor, just as an excellent Governor may make an indifferent Premier, as witness the case of tho late Sir George Grey. Tho hjltdlon Times, indeed, remarks that the Premier is specially qualified by reason of hia exceptional" dignity and discretion." This strikes us as perfectly delicious One might as well describe Kruger as a model of sincerity and good breeding or the Emperor William ns remarkable for hia I gentleness and humility. The Premier’s great virtue ia his fighting power, and as Governor he would have no one to fight. We do not think the position will be

offered him, nor do we think ho would accept it if it were offered. We prefer to regard it as a hint that ho believes himself as meriting some honor of an extraordinary and striking kind. A knighthood or an order will do very well for an Australian Premier or a subordinate member of a New 7, aland Ministry, but Mr Soddon’a case demands special and urgent consideration.

At the termination of the Napier Rifles’ parade on Monday night a handsome silver medal, with two clasps, boaring the inscription of “South Africa,” will be presented to Trooper Heillord, from bis comrades in the Rifles, Surgaon-Captain do Lislo has presented a valuable silver challenge cup to tho A liuriri Mounted Rifles for competition. The trophy, which is now on view at Mr S. E, Cooper’s shop, is of artistic design, and will no doubt bo keenly competed for. Tho Australian Widows’ Fund Life Assurance Society has purchased the freehold in Customhouse-quay, Wellington, where it has been located since tho Now Zealand branch was opened. It is intended to erect commodious offices on this central site.

Owing to a misunderstanding the pigeons for the Masterton race to-day, in connection with the Ilawko’s Bay Homing Club, did not leave Napier yesterday, and therefore no race will take place to-day. Tho fresh date will bo fixed in tbe course of a few days. Messrs Crarar and Son offer special inducements to book buyers, having reduced tho price of a thousand oloth-bound books, comprising works in fiction, biography, science, travel, Ac,, from 3s Od to Is (id. This should be an excellent opportunity for librarians and others.

Tho horses from tho K&at Coast are evidently hold in high esteem for general purposes* The latest request is for ft couple of sturdy animals as “ gunners/’ for tho Permanent Artillery, for carriages at the reception to the Yorks in Wellington. These two horses have boon forwarded, and another couple for the same object are being broken-in at Hastings, and will be sent down shortly. There will be a rise of Is por 100 feet on all kauri and totara timber in tho Hawke’s Bay province from to - day. This is occasioned by the demands of labor, wages having been on tho increase for some time past, and tho forests having been so depleted that the timber has now to he brought long distances to the mills. The rise in timber is general, the South Island mills having made similar increases on all classes of timber.

At a meeting of merchants and mercantile agents hold yesterday afternoon it was decided, that where practicable, aV volunteers in their employ are to bo allowed the necessary leave to enable them to proceed to Wellington to take part in the military display in connection with the reception of the Duke and Duchess of York. It was also resolved to close their places of business on Tuesday, ISth June, the day of the Goyal landing in Wellington. Mr Charles Siddells, so well known as the landlord of the Eoyal and Albion ! Hotels in Napier, has recently assumed the proprietorship of the Langholm Hotel at Mangaweka, and has made himself as popular in that flourishing country district as he did while m Hawke’s Bay. On Monday evening ho was entertained by the residents of the district at a social given in honor of his birthday, at which highly complimentary references were made to Mr Siddells’popularity, and his readiness to assist in any object that was for the welfare of the district.

There is at present ou viow at Mr IV. M. Newman’s, Tennyson-street, an exceptionally handsome piece of furniture in the shape of a shield made of totara of the finest quality, beautifully mottled, and on which is mounted a very fine and splendidly polished horn and pair of boar tusks, mounted in silver, and having on each side of the horn two fern leaves in silver, and lot in the centre a greenstone tablet with the letters " N.Z ”on it. The shield was made to the order of an English gentleman &*> a camplo of colonial workmanship from exclusively colonial materials. The woodwork has been turned out of Mr Newman’s establishment, and the silver work has been dono by Mr F. W, Collins, and tho excellence of the workmanship reflects tho utmost credit on all concerned.

The Equitable Life Assurance Society of tho United States, a company recognised as one of the strongest in tho world, Ims commenced business in proper earnest in Now X.ealand. Tho figures of the Society, with its attractive and unique tables, backed as they are by a surplus of over £13,000.000, and total funds of over £62,500,000, should be a good recommendation to insurers. The increase in asaurano in force during 11)00 in this Society was £0,'11)6.578. Mr T. W. Raploy, of Stratford, who nt present is in Napier, is tho district manager for Taranaki, Wanganui, and Hawke’s Hay, and has appointed Mr Henry Laecelies, who is well known in insurance circles (both in fire and life) the resident agent for this district. This company has done good business here already, and should meet with every success.

Tho Hoard of Trinity College. London, announce the appointment of Mr Alfred Mistowskl, ilua.B.Oxon., as the examiner for tho college in South Africa, Nor? Zealand, and Tasmania this year in practical subjects: Pianoforte, organ, violin, singing, Ac. Mr Mistowski (who ia a British subject by birth) is an old student of the institution which has now appointed him to this important examinership. In tho years 1890-93 he held the Henry Smart fcholarship, and studied under Dr. Gordon Saunders and Mr Frederick Cordor, and in 1893 he gained the Costa Prize and Gold Medal for tho best string quartette. Ho took his Mus-B. degree at Oxford in 1898. Mr Mistowski has always made the pianoforte and violin his principal instruments, but ho is also a player of the viola and an organist. His compositions are numerous, and include a dramatic cantata, " The Forge,” two string quartettes, two symphonies for full orchestra, and a pianoforte concerto. Colonel Hunt and Captain Nuthall, Imperial liomount Commissioners, came on to Napier yesterday afternoon. Tho former wont on to Auckland by the Mararoa, and Captain Nuthall, together with Mr Keakes, Government veterinarian, who has boon testing tho horses submitted to tho commissioners, leave this morning for Wellington, where Captain Nuthall inspects the shipment of a number of horses by tho s.a. Cornwall, nap- on her way from Brisbane. Tho Hawke’s Bay horses approved by tho commissioners and duly passed, had boon very carefully selected by Mr W. Miller, of tho local Mock Department, and lie has devoted a groat deal of time in procuring the best lot available, in order to show what Hawke’s Bay can produce in the way of army remounts. Mr W. A, Boocroft. of Hastings, had tho arrangements at hii repository in excellent order for the inspection of tiro horses, and tho Commissioners highly complimented him upon tho business capacity displayed by him in enabling them to so quickly complete their work.

For some time past tho North British and Now Zealand Investment Company has found it impossible to find suitable loans at remunerative rates in Now Zealand, and at last it has resolved to “throw up tho spougo in other words, to go into liquidation (writes tliu Loudon correspondent of tho Aurklmul Slur under date April 19th). If tho directjrs’anticipations contained in tho annual report issued last Saturday bo fulfilled, the result, so far from proving a loss to tho shareholders, will bo eminently satisfactory. It is expected that not only will the whole of tho capital bo returned, but also a bonus. On tho whole tho company has paid during its existence a fair return in tho money employed. For tho first five years tho dividends distributed wore at. tho rate of tl per cent.; for tho next five years ti per ceut., and for tho last four years, during which it was practically' being wound up, 5 per cent for (ho first two, and 1 per cent for tho last two years. While paying those dividends the company accumulated out of its profits a reserve fund equal to nearly 23 per cent of its capital. How is it. 1 wonder, that these Northern companies contrive to do so much bettor than similar concerns with London directorates ?

A. very pleasant entertainment was given in the Wilson Hall, Spit, last evening by the pupils of the Port Presbyterian Sunday-school and friends in aid of the library fund of the school. There was a good attendance, the Hot. 0. Connor presiding. The Kov. Mr Connor presented to the Sabbathschool a handsome memorial tablet inscribed with the names of the two presidents of the school since its establishment
