WAIPAWA.

[from oue own correspondent.] May 30, 1001. It is reported that Mr R. Johnstone intends erecting a sawmill at Motuotaria, Wanstead. The natives are gathering to meet the Duke and Duchess of York at Eotorua. A number left hero yesterday, and a contingent of the Porangahau Maoris arrived this morning, and with about 100 others from Tikokino, Takapau, and Waipawa will leave to-morrow at 1 50 by a special train rut New Plymouth. The Loyal Tavistock Lodge, X.0.0.P., M U., celebrated the twenty-second anniversary of its existence on Wednesday evening in the Town Hall, Waipukurau. The celebration, which was two-fold in character, took the form of a ball and a lodge welcome to returned Trooper J. Hobson, a member of the lodge. As befitted a prosperous lodge, the arrangements were in handsome style, and excellently carried out by the strong committee of lodge members. Mr W". Banks conducted the duties of secretary and treasurer in an efficient manner. Thera were present several visiting brethren, chiefly from the sister lodge, the Loyal Abbotsford. The hall itself was resplendent in bunting, set off by palms and evergreens, and a special feature of the decorations .was the banner painted by Mr W. Banks and the Hawke’s Bay Diatriot Oddfellows’banner. Amongst those who had returned from the front were Surgeon-Captain Godfray, Lieutenant Collett, J. Hobson, L. Collinge, and E. Hopkins. The catering by Mr Jolley was in the best style, and Mr and Mrs J. Watts were very attentive to the requirements of the supper room. The grand march and polka introduced a programme of dances, which wore gone through to the excellent and tuneful music of Miss Moronoy (piano), Mr H. Liddell (violin), and Mr James Co-grove (cornet), and about Kiu guests wore present. . Messrs F. Buiiy, J. W. ■lull, ami J. Winlovo wore capable M’a.C. Extras to the programme were played by Mrs Seymour, Miss Jolley, and Mr J. Bailey. Mr W. Chambers, Deputy Provincial Grand Master, made a short speech of welcome on behalf of the lodge to the returned troopers, enumerating them, with special mention of Surgeon-Captain Godfray and Trooper Hobs',n, highly eulogising their conduct nt the front, expressing also the hope that at no distant period the lodge would welcome another trooper member, IJro. Simpson. Trooper Hobson, on behalf of self and returned troopers, returned thanks. The N.Q. of the lodge, Mr J. Winlovo, and the secretary of the same, Mr F. Bailey, and all members are to bo complimented on the success whioli attended the anniversary function.
