Considerable dissatisfaction exists amongst many of the volunteers who went from here to attend the reception of the Imperial soldiers in your city. The men leit here at 4 a m., those mounted having been on parade for the purpose of entraining their horses from 1.30, a.m. After journeying to Napier without sleep or food, they were ordered to parade immediately upon arrival, without breakfast for themselves or feed and water tor their horses. Considering the heat they experienced, and it Was X p.m. before they were dismissed, some of the men consider it was cruelty to animals' and men alike, and that batter arrangements should have been made than were provided for visiting volunteers. I understand the Land Purchase Commissioners will shortly»viait Mangatoro with a view to fixing the price to be given by the Government to the Assets Realisation Board for the freehold. This looks like an early settlement of the matter, and should result in the speedy opening up of the block for close settlement, and greater prosperity to Danevirke. A new sawmill is being erected at Mangatera by Mr Rogers, who has leased the timber rights from tho settlers. A few years ago no one would have thought that a sawmill would be erected for the purpose of cutting burnt timber, hat as the bush begins to disappear old workings are gone over again and apparently made to pay. The new railway viaduct over the Mangatera has been commenced, and I fear it is evident we shall continue to suffer fr m insufficient passenger accommodation at the station, so long as these expensive works are under construction on this section.
