ASHORE AT GREYMOUTH. A TOTAL WRECK. [BY TELEGRAPH.] Wellington, Monday. The postmaster at Greymouth reports the steamer Taupo ashore on the north beach. She is reported te have broken away from her moorings. Her position is dangerouß, and the sea heavy. Farther particulars of the accident to the Taupo are supplied by the Post office. Her position is considered very orifcical. She ib just now outside North Tip Head, where the Mapourika was at first. A heavy sea is beating her all the time. A line had been got ashore, and five men landed, but the line is now broken, and they are trying to get another ashore. Most of the men are in the rigging. There were about 23 men on board. She was loaded and ready for sea, and carried away the warps and chain cable, and drifted out past the entrance. She was (hen thrown up were she now lies. The mails on board are— For Duuedin one bag, for Oamaru one bag. A messenger is there with the mail contractor waiting if possible to get at them. I The postal authorities state that the I mails and all hands from the s.s. Taupo are now ashore, after meeting with much difficulty, the line having broken several times with the swing of the ship. The Bea is very heavy, and the general opinion is that the vesaol will break up. LA.TEB. The local manager of the Union Company had made arrangements for the prompt despatch of the Wainui to Greymouth with appliances for hauling off the Taupo, but in face of the telegram he received this afternoon, stating that it was useless to send salvage gear, as the steamer was likely to become a total wreck, the idea has been abandoned in the meanwhile. Gbeymouth, Monday. The Taupo had 690 tons of coal and 24,000 feet of timber on board. There are no insurances on cargo or vessel.
