AN IMPERIAL RESERVE.
fBT MIiEOBAPH.J Wellington, Wednesday. The proposal for the formation of an Imperial reserve force was laid before the Acting-Premier by a deputation, which inoliided Sir Arthur Douglas, Colonel Penton, and others. Captain Barclay said it was proposed that the corps should be forced on Imperial lines, and consist bf ex-Imperial officers, and men of all branches of Her Majesty's service. He a9ked the Government whether it would accept Buoh a corps, and pointed out that sections 82 and 83 of the Defence Act, 1886, gave power to the Governor to enrol for special or particular service. It was, he said, estimated that 1000 officers and men would be enrolled. As to the finances he suggested a capitation of £3 per head per annum to the men. The officers asked for nothing. The Hon. Mr Ward regarded the idea with favor, and said he would be glad to submit the proposal to his colleagues for consideration. He could not, he said, commit the Government to anything in connection with the details, but if their services wero accepted there was but little doubt that necessary legislative effect would be given to it.
