PEACE CELEBRATION.

A meeting of the executive of the peace celebration committee wag held at the Council Chambers last evening the Mayor presiding. It was resolved that funds be called for the celebration, and to point out that everything in connection with the celebration would be free to the public except the proposed ball. The Mayor and seoretary were appointed joint treasurer* It was decided that the executive offer prizes of not less than £5 £3, and £2 for the best, eecond, and third tableau m the procession. The celebration will take the following form • A thanksgiving service in all the local churches j that a grand military spectacle take place on the Marine-parade first thing in ths morning of peace day; that a monster procession, consisting of tableaux of every description (to whioh it is hoped the country people will contribute at least one tableau), and every craft will, it is expected, be represented; that a fancy costume football tournament, Beven a-side, military sports, &c, teke plaoe on the Beoreation faroundj that the citizens be asked to decorate their premises during the day and illuminate the same in the eveninirthat a torchlight procession take place through the town ; that there be a grand display of fireworks and huge bonfires, and a musiotd programme by both local bands on the Marine Parade, and that all the steamers in port be arranged for. if possible, to take up positions off the Parade and join in the fireworks display m the evening j that- the Veterans' Association oocupy a piominent position in. the day's celebrations ; that Messrs 8. Charlton, G. Bissell, and B. N. Anderson be asked to assist the evening show with their oxy -hydrogen views; that the Wanderers' Bicycle Club be asked to assist in the day and night shows; that a first-class ball take . place on the evening following peace niglti and & children's ball takes place next evening providing it is not Saturday when it would take place on the Monday night The Mayor received the following telegram from the Acting-Premier in reply to one sent by him asking that an excursion train be granted on the day of the declaration of peaoe:— "You may depend upon every reasonable excursion arrangements being made for peace celebration day, particulars of which I will inform you later." Fireworks and bonfires, Mr T. Waterworth, assisted by members o£ fire brigade to be seleoted by himself Assembly of steamers, Captains Tonkin and Peterson, Messrs F. Bee, and E Puflett. Band programme, Bandmasters Garrison and City Bands. Ball, Meßsrs T Durney T. Bear, J. P. Thomson. Children's ball, same, assisted by eection of ladies committee. Decoration committee, Messis T. Bear, T. Durney, and Water, with power to add to their number.
