THE COMMONWEALTH
Becoived June 12, 9.50 a.m, Melbourne, Tuesday. Mr M'Lean wired the other Premiers that in view of the strong feeling against the proposed amendment of clause 74 of the Commonwealth Bill, he suggested a conference of Premiers to consider the question, and also in view of the intricate legal questions involved that the Attor-neys-General should attend. The South Australian Premier replied that his Government are extremely dissatisfied with the proposed compromise with reference to appeals, but they have no authority to agree to any amendment of the bill. He therefore thinks that without a conference the Governments should agrea to the present bill being pasßed without amendment. Received June 13, 1 a.m. Mr Lyne considers that ifc is useless for Che Premiers to confer on Clause 74, as they have no power to alter the BUI. The matter will be fully disoussed by Parliament, Mr Barton has cabled the proposed verbal amendments to the clause, but they are not yet definitely Jmown.
