ROYAL HUMANE SOCIETY.

ANNUAL MEETING. [by telegraph.] ■Chkistchurck, Monday. ■ The first annual meeting of tlie Royal Humane Society of New Zealand was held to-day. The report stated that the society had been formed without any idea of competing with the Australasian society, but simply to carry out the objects of the society with greater facilities and less delay. Special reference was made to the late Mr John Joyce, who bad shown energy, tact, and perseverance in starting the sooiety, and was its first president at the time of his death. The court of directors intended from time to time other objects than that specified when the society was first established, with a view to extending, enlarging, and developing the true scope, ends, and iiiras : of the organisation. They hoped by this i means to stimulate and encourage the young people of the colony to acts of bravery. During the year the direotors < had made 24 awards, not a few being for ; acts of bravery of a very high class. The directors had issued 2000 roller sheets of ' instructions, printed on calico, and re- ' commended another issue of at least 500 ] copies, so that every school, boating club, < swimming club, &c, should be supplied. ] The directors also suggested the erection ' of caution posts at places known to be i dangerous. The balance-sheet showed a 1 credit balance of .698. Sir John Hall 1 was elected president and the Mayors of i Christchurch, Auckland, Wellington, and I Dunedin vice-presidents. '
