DANEVIRKE.
[from our own correspondent.] January 23, 1899. An endeavor ia being made to arrange for a bowling tournament, to be held at Easter at Palmorston North, at which Wellington, Peilding, Danevirke, and Falmerston clubs will compete. A sitting of the Police Court was held this morning, when Messrs J. Drummond and M. Hendersen, J's.P., presided. The assault case against Henry James was adjourned till Monday next through short service, and to allow defendant time in which to procure evidence. David Pindlay was charged with disorderly conduct while drunk, and with resisting the police. On oharge a. plea of guilty was entered, and a fine of £1 and 7s costs inflicted in each case. The firßt consignment of cheese this season from the Umutaoroa factory is now on the market, and being pronounced a thoroughly good article by experts, is meeting with much favor and a ready sale. Messrs A. Paul and W. Henderson play off the last round of the bowling championship on Wednesday. A meeting of tradesmen, to regulate the terms o£ credit and to provide for the transaction of business on Bound and equitable terms, is to be held shortly. Our Maori friends are at present endeavoriug to organise a sports meeting and dance at the pah. Contributions are coming in very freely, and the affair ia bound to be well patronised. The sacred cencert last evening in aid of the Wilkins family was a pronounced success both financially and in point of programme. Bvery item was good, and the sum of .£9 10s will be handed over to the family in question. Curious discrepancies have been discovered in the performances of a runner at the late sports here as sent to various sports clubs, and it is expected that further inquiries will bring further revelations.
