WELLINGTON R.O. SUMMER MEETING.

First Day. [by trlbqbaph.] Wellington, Saturday. There was lovely weather for the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club's summer meeting. The course was in good condition. About 4000 people wero present, including viaitois from all paits of the colony. In most of the events the fields were good, and the racing of an interesting character. Both Mr Evefcfc, who adjusted the handicaps for the chief events, and Mr Henry, that of the hacks, received, many congratulations. Mr H. Piper was nlost successful in securing even starts without the assistance of the starting gates. In the Hurdles old Liborator broke down a couple of furlongs from homo when going very strongly, and his' racing career is no doubt ended. For the Cup Okoari, the Taranaki mare, was stoutly supported by the Wesfc Coasters, and though she flattered her admirers for the greater part of the journey by .the manner in which she sustained the lead, had to give way when, the finish came to the Hon. Mr Onnond'B Dreadnought horse. Target, another of Mr Ormond's, was sent out a hot favorite for the President's Handicap, but was never prominent. Mr Stead's Stepniak filly Nantes wa3 an odds-on favorite for the Nursery, but Advance, after getting well away,- nev6r left the result in doubt. In the last race Amoureux paid the best dividend of the day, but there are many who claim thatTitoki finished first, yet Mr Scales, the judge, is confident that Amoureux had nearly a length the best of it. An innovation was made in working the totalisators, that in • vogue in Chrißtchurch being adopted, and ss the public were not aware what price they were getting until the racft was well under way there was considerable grumbling, and this increased as the day wore on, until the stewards met and decided to return to the old system on Monday. The sum of £10,427 was handled during, the day, which would have been greatly augmented had the old system been used. On the first day last year £10,320 was put through. The results were : — ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP, Of 150 soys ; second horse to receive 20 soys ; 1 mile. 21§ Mr W. Lemon's b g Bush Rose, by Torpedo — Primrose, syrs, Bst 71b (White) 1 130 Hon. From a good start Okoari'B colors were first to show in front, and with Ruby Twist and Cannonshot she carried on the running along the back of the course, with, the others bunched. Okoari was the first to turn into the straight, antl as the Taranaki mare passed the stand the first time she was at the head of affairs, with Ruby Twist and Cannonshot still in their positions, and Fulmen tailing off. Okoari was still being driven along, and by the river bend drew out two or three lengths from Ruby Twist and Cannonshot, and the pair rapidly began to die away. With a mile traversed Okoari had further increased her lead, and for the next furlong or two flattered her backers, but with half a mile still to go the cerise jacket of the Hon. J. D. Onnond could be seen getting nearer to the leader, while at the same time the Auckland colt was bustled along. At the turn Daunt was almost on terms with Okoari, and a few strides further on had her beaten. Daunt winning rather easily by two lengths from Explosion, who passed the fast tiring Okoari near the post, Ruby Twist fourth, Cannonshot, Crusoe, and Fulmen, finishing in that order.
