Mr James Stewart, C.E., and a survey party are now afc Maungapohatu, in the mountains of the Urewera country, engagod in making a reconnaisanee survey for the suggested railway line from the Auckland district to Gisborne. The friendly societies' gala took place to-day in the Domain. Owing to the threatening weather it was not so successful as hoped for. There was a procession to the Domain, and a programme of sports. Wellington, Saturday. The arrivals in the colony last year were 18,856 and the departures IG,K)9.
