A sudden call came to H.M.S. Koyalist on Saturday night, and she left shortly after 1 a.m. yesterday morning for Auckland and Samoa. The Union Company's s.s. Flora arrives .early this morning from Gisborne and Auckland with 120 tons general cargo, ■which will be landed at the breakwater, and at noon she leaves for Wellington and Southern ports. The Union Company's s.s. Omapere is due at about 6 a.m. this morning from the North. She goes alongside the Star of Victoria to tranship 400 bales of wool, and then comes inside to the breastwork to discharge 80 tons of general cargo and a quantity of wool for the shore. She is expected to leave for Wellington about soon. The s.s. Beautiful. Star arrived at the breastwork last evening from Wellington. After discharge of cargo she returns to Wellington. . The s.s. Te Kapu returned from Wairoa on Saturday night. The Tyser Company's s.s. Star of Victoria ia i expected to finish here to-day, and leaves for Wellington and London. Huddart Parker's s.s. Elingamito arrived at the breakwater at 10 a.m. last Saturday from Wellington and Southern ports. She landed 80 tons general cargo and at 8 p.m. left for Gisborno, Auckland, and Sydney. The s.s. Weka went out to the Pania on Saturday afternoon on a fishing excursion. I/ast midnight the Weka was to leave for Waimarama, Mangakuri, and thence north to' Whangawei. A big dredge is at work at the top of Yiotoria channel, Dunedin, taking out a cut afc the western side, which will make the channel 100 ft wide where all the trouble has been lately with the Union Company's intercolonial steamers: A couple of piles will also be placed at the western side of the channel at the same place, so that the risk of getting out of the channel by big steamers will bB con- j aiderably lessened. There is not the slightest doubt that the introduction of steam in the cargocarrying service between New York and the colonies is ousting out the sailers | from the business.
