Chiustchuuch, Thursday. A t a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce to-day it was decided to inquire into tjie working of the patent laws generally with the view to obtaining a more perfect system of protection. Complaint was made that full information was not afforded by tlio Colonial Patent Office. Tho Postal Department wroto stating that the Union Shipping Company would not adopt tho suggestion to detain tho Australian stoainors at tho Uluff during tho summer months until tho arrival of tho Dunedin express with tho mails and passengers. In connection with tho proposed Cheviot railway, tho Public Works Department wrote that the survey of the whole line from Culverden to Hlonhoiin had boon commenced. Tho Chamber, howover, decided to urge tho necessity of an immediate dotailod survoy of tho Cheviot portion of lino in order that the country might bo opened up life onco.
