[PKOM OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.] January 16, 1899. From a good number of applicants for the position of dog-tax collector for the Danevirke Borough Council, Mr Douglas was reappointed. The police returns for Sergeant Siddells' sub-district for the year just closed show an increase of 10 in the total number of offences committed, the numbers being 285 for 1897 and 295 for 1898. In drunkenness there were 98 cases as against 86 in the previous year, and theft contributed 38 to the 47 of the year before. In assault cases there was an increase of one (20 — 21), threatening and abusive language an increase of two (17 — 15) ; 11 cases of vagrancy, a decrease of 5; 11 cases of obscene and profane language, a decrease of 2; 11 oases of lunacy, an increase of 2 ; 8 cases each of disorderly conduct, disturbing meetings, and false pretences ; 6 each of breaches of the peace,' failure to support relations, and applications for sureties of the peace ; 5 cases each of burglary and malicious injury to property; 4 cases each of' indecent behaviour and stone-throwing; three caso3 each of cruelty to animals ,- illegally taking fish, and being illegally on premises ; two cases each of assault, occasioning bodily harm, damaging police uniform, neglected children, and resouing cattle from being impounded, one case each of assault on police, cutting and wounding, defacing brands, disobeying order of Court, furious driving, forging and uttering, illegally shooting game, keeping disorderly house, obstructing and resisting police, receiving stolen property, and refusing to quit licensed premises. During the year 16 persons in the district were committed for trial, and 233 were summarily oonvicted. The following will represent the Phoenix cricket team in their second cup match with Woodvillo ou Wednesday next: — Knight, Nowonham, Downe, Hartgill, Pawson, Glass, Guy, Kearney, Loader, Henderson, and Deighton. A local team of tennis players went to Woodville on Saturday afternoon, and at tho hands of a Woodville combination received a defeat. Miss Hettio Lorraine Tansley and her sister, Miss F. Tanslay, are organising a sacrod concert for next Sunday evening in tho Town Hall in aid of the Wilkins family, who are in necessitous circumstances. The last affair of the kind promoted by these ladies resultod in a deserving widow and family beuetitting to the extent of about JX).
