[PROM OT7B ORMONDVILLB CORRESPONDENT.] January 16, 1899. The following will represent the Norsewood Crioket Club in their match with Waipukurau on Wednesday next at Waipukurau :— H. Fayen, W. Torkilsen, A. Englebretsen, A. Thoratensen, A. Chrjstoffersen, P. Nissen, 0. Erioksen, A. C. Collins, E, Collinge, and P. G. Grant. The watering of the Danevirke streets with the spray nozzle does not seem to be all that the promoters of the idea expected it would be. In some places the roadway iB just sprayed and in others it is thoroughly soaked. The soaked portions cut up very badly, and the ire of the burgesses is raised in consequence. Some of the councillors are very much pat out by it, and it is quite probable that at next meeting of the Borough Council the matter will be fully discussed and a ohange insisted on. The water cart is voted by a good number a great improvement on the system at present in vogue, and the chances of a reversion to the old style are very good inde3(J, The prize money in the Maiden and Handicap at Makotuku sports has been withheld pending the result of enquiries concerning the previous performances of two of the competitors. One is said to have run off small markß in good company at Wanganui, besides winning events at Marten and other placss. He then appropriated the Maiden at the above mentioned meeting. Replies to the enquiries sent out op behalf of the club are expected to arrive earjy in the week, and the matter will then be decided. The Danevirke Caledonian Society is to hold an athletic meeting in February. A meeting, to make arrangements, is to be held at an early date, and a tip-top meeting is expected. There is no doubt that these Danevirke meetings are becoming very popular among racing men, and if the weather is right the fields can be depended on to be AJ. Danevirke cricketers play another cup match at Woodyille on Wednesday next. Conttable Hay, of Dapeyirke, being on the sick list. Constable Basjciville, of Waipukurau, is at present on duty there in his place. It is whispered that there are likely to be quite a large number of oandidates for the Waipawa seat next election. Among them Hon. W, C. Smith, M.L.C., and Messrs Loughnan, and H. H, Bridge are mentioned, The grass seed at Makaretu is ripening very rapidly in the hot weather which followed the recent heavy rains, and all contractors will be in full swing in the course of a few days. The donkey engine hauling goar in use at Gamman's mill at Smiths siding, Makotuku, is proyipg vastly superior to the old plan pf bullock haulage, The logs are brought in faster, and are taken out of out-of-the-way corners quite inaccessible to bullocks. Up grades that bullocks could only crawl tip, this machinery brings the timber at a smart walking pace. Then again a ground that is quite impassable to the erstwhile friends of fchp eawmjller is negotiated with the utmost ease by the means above indicated. The machinery can exert a terrific pull, so much so in fact that the ordinary dogs and chains cannot stand it, and a specially strong make have to be used. The now idea workß like a charm, and bad weather and sloppy country will not in the future be nearly so effective in stopping the supply of logs at our sawmills as these two agencios have been hitherto. To got good work from bullocks in a severe winter it is necessary to feed them well, and the purchaeo of chaff for a team is no small matter. The establishment of the donkey engino gear naves all this expense, and in this line alone is a very great improvement. A planing gear is being erected at Mangatera in connection with the Tiratu mills, and new engines are being put in fit the Piripiri mill.
