. [per united press association.] Auckland, Thursday. John Saifc, a gum sorter, of Kawerua, was killed by failing from his horse. Mr Ryan, a settler at Kaitara, was gored by a. bull, and had his thigh badly broken. The horn also entered the man's neck below the ear. He was found under a tree after having lain out all night. Mander and Bradley's mill at Nihetapu was completely destroyed by fire last night. The damage is estimated at ,£3OOO. There was no insurance. ( The origin of the fire is unknown. Latee. The City Council to-night, on the motion of the Mayor, appointed a committee to examine the finances of the Corporation with a view to bringing the expenditure within the income. The residence of Mr T. Sutton, Whawhau Valley, near Whangarei township, was burned down. The family were away at the time. The furniture was insured in the South British for .£IOO. The house was owned by Mr A. T. Potter, and was insured in the Commercial Union for £150. New Plymouth, Thursday.. At; the ipquest on John Copestake, who hanged himself yesterday, the jury returned a verdict of suicide while temporarily insane. Wellington, Thursday. The s.s. Waikare has 40 Sounds excursionists on board, and 60 or 70 join here. The total will be some 200. The insurance companies have paid Mr C. Dunedin, Thursday. Kum Yoon Leo was to-day fined 20s and costs for Jnot observing the weekly half-holiday. Joseph Sparrow, ironfounder, was similarly fined for a breach nf the Factory Act, in, not giving a boy in his employ a half-holiday on December 24th. i
