MUTINY IN MADAGASCAR.
Paris, November 20. The Lilerte gives particulars of a recent mutiny of French troops in Madagascar. The journal says: — "Private letters inform us of a serious mutiny , which has occurred in the second company , of the disciplinary battalion of the colony _ stationed at Diego Suarez. It appears _ that, with the praiseworthy object of giv- j ing these men an opportunity of regaining f their readmission to the ordinary _ ranks by brilliant conduct in the field, _ General Gallieni decided to transfer them _ from Diego Suarez to the west coast of ( Madagascar to take part in the opera- , tions against the insurgent Sakalavas. , But, as soon as they were landed and in j possession of their arms, the men became £ most unruly, and pillaged the village , of Andjin, near which they were _ encamped. . Moreover, six soldiers _ deserted with arms and kit. Finally, a ( company of Malagasy rifles had to be t employed to overcome and disarm the _ mutineers. Two of the deserters were , retaken and shot, and the whole company , was sent back to Diego Suarez a few days _ afterwards." i
