Auckland, Monday. At the Police Court before Mr H W. Brabant a good-looking young Maori man named Watene Kara, who was arrested recently by Constable Stanyer an Maoeawhltlkan, near Te Knltl, in the King Country, was charged on remand with on or about May 16bh, at Glsborne, unlawfully removing a native girl named Haromol Repeka (Rebecca) being under the age of 16 years and being at the time under the lawful control of her father, Horl Folpci, to a place where Poipol waa nnable to exercise oontrol over her, with Intent on his (Kara's) part to oarnally know the said Haromil Repeka. The couple were found living together at Mangawhitlkan, Sergeant Clark applied for a remand in order that the case might be remanded to Glsborne for trial, Mr Jaokflon Palmer nppeired for the aconeed nnd objected to a remand. He said Kara Informed him that the girl, whose parents resided near Gleborne, insisted on coming away with him and would not remain with her parents ; moreover, there wbb evidence to prove that the girl was 17 years of age, &i)d therefore over age. It appeared from the girl's itatemet that her father wanted her to marry another native at Poverty Bay, but the girl strongly objected to this as she did not like tbe man intended for her, and she ran away with Kara to avoid being pressed into marrlepe. Kara wanted her to remain at Gisborne, but she insisted on going away with him. Mr Brabant remanded Kara, in order that the oase might be brought on at the Glsborna Court. The girl Repeka, who waa in Conrt, is a bnzom and good looking girl, and speaks English well. The father, Poipol, Is a chief of some note, residing near Glsborne.
