i Sydney, Sunday, A conference of Newcastle ooal owners and miners' representatives was held to consider the request that the owners of the district form themselves Into a " tine " with the view of raising the selling prioe of coal Tilth a consequent Inoreaee of the hewlsg rates paid to the mloers, The men blbo desired certain concessions with reference to filling small coal. The conference was representative of both sides, and the proceedings wers marked by good feeling. After eaoh had stated their case Mr Gregeon, superintendent of the A. A. Company, who aoted as chairman and spokesman for the owners, admitted that the ontpnt of coal had Increased bat the price had deoreaaed. The trade was in a bad Btate owing to keen competition. It was impossible for the owners to enter into a general agreement amongst themselves, tome of theoolllerlea being woiked at » loss limply for the benefit of the miners, The only answer that oould be given wai that the owners could not at preoent grant an inorease of the hewfog rate and conld make no allowance wlch regard to filling imall ooal. This wai the final and nnanlmons decision of the owners present and tome not at the conference.
