CORRESPONDENCE, The following correspondence was read and dealt with :— From Carllle and Eamphtles, wanting to know what tho Counoll proposed doing regarding tho drain now being rnitdo on Mr Weed's property, as no notioe had been clven tbet the Council intout'ed continuing tha drain throngh the adjoining property belonging tn Spoedy'a estate.— Verbal permlaslon had been received by *he overseer from Mr Humphries after tsommnniaatinp with Mr Speedy. Farther cabstand accommodation oould conveniently be provided in that portion of Emerson-street between Kirkcildlo and Stains' and the National Bunk to Palmer's.— Referred to Pablio Worla Committee.

From M. Ryan, applying for permission to fanoe in tho whole of the pathway In Hastings-street for the purpose of creating s balcony in the front of the hotel. The 'work wonld be proceeded with at once, and the obstruction to traffic removed as early as possible.-- Granted; overseer to supervise. WATERWORKS ENGINEER'S REPORT. The engineer reported that the engine had been working 146 hoars dnrlng May ; ooal nsed, 3 tons 19awt 2qrs ; ccke ase'd, 320 bags ; water pumped, 7,300,000 Halloas, against 7,100,000 gallons for the prevlons month. Ths machinery was ia good working orde;.— Received. OVERSEER'S PROGRESS REPORT. The overseer reporfpil on work done Daring the month 576 loads of road material wf^re put on tho road, 517 loads nf rubbish, removed nff the samp, and 185 loadi of water sprinkled on,— Received. PETITION. • Cr. Cranby pre>iontdd a petition from a •number of residents asking that the private street known aa continuation of Cobdan-road be deolarod a public street.— Beferred to Public Works Committee, overseer to report on tha condition of tlie road.

The committee reported that noting on the recommendation of Mr Waterworth, the well linking contract of MrE, J, M&rtln had been determined, and the work was now being done by day labor,— Adopted. FINANCB. The following vouchers wete passed for payment :— General account £399 11s 6d, speotal No. 1 219 19i lid, water •apply £189 19i 2d, Meanee domain £11 12a 6rl. MISCELLANEOUS, In reply to Cr. Smith the Mayor said that the alanghterhouse qaestlon had not teen lost Bight of. Tbn matter had been deferred owing to the flood, bad It woald be attended to as soon as possible. On Cr. Welamon'a reoommendatlon repalr« needed In Fltzroy and Saaly- roads were authorlied. Cr. Neal reported a (hw la the ovllnder ad the waterworks, though the working of the maoblnery wbb not inteiiered with thereby. The matter woald reoelve the attention of the waterworks committee.
