The Northi LQ i e players were from the town clubs. 1 n ™ match was arranged for the purpose **" making a final selection for a team De represent Hawke's Bay v, Wellingt m . & next Saturday. The following were t " n teams :— South : Pull-back, B. Irvln ' n E three-quarters, M'Donnell, Dr. Reid, a: * ed S. Smith ; halves, Tutere and Takaranf )rn forwards, Morgan, Knowlan, V, Ke me (captain), Barr, Ansell, Mitchell, Blac "*♦" and Sebley. Notth : Full-back, Cog ■j 6 lan j three-quarters, Welsman, Laws, ai ' 8 Caldwell J halves, O'Connell and Do ja » nelly ; forwards, Jago, Beale, Mathe Br » son, Geordine, Chad wick, Woodwor ''•" Toohy, Cheer, and Bwon (captain t0 Referee, Mr Cowell | line umpires, non f"? Mr Wolßtenholme, south Mr Bennet ■ a ™ The game all round was a really bad di ai play of football and very uninteresting i 0Q watch. It was fairly give and take rlgl m through, and perhaps the North had tl ne besb of ib. Firat blood was drawn by tt re North from a line ont in their opponent *" 25, Toohy secured the ball and passed I * 9 > Mattcrson, who smartly sent lb to Lawi a that player neatly and quickly pottin c " with his lefb foot. This was the oni a soore in the first spell. In the eecon JJj spell a Northern man was collared on th 31 J Southorn line and jusb under the bar. _ V scrum was formed ; O'Connell dived I la and hooked the ball out, and on th K> Southern wing men coming round th 8> scrum a free kick wus given againsb them r r which was easily oonverted. North, ly I points. This was a real bit of han 83 1 luck for the North, The free kick 10 iug should bavo been in their favor, a y O'Connell recklessly Infringed. Tho goa was kicked with a murmur df applansi " from the spectators who sympathise! r " with the South. Bat their turn was t( j" come. In the last ten minutes they fairlj ~ warmed up, and from good play on thi ■* part of Morgan, Tutere, and M'Donnel | the latter scored. Tutere kicked the goa 11 from near the line— magnificent effort 6 South 5 points, and the crowd decidedlj ? cheerful. Jueb on the cill of time f Knowlam burst throngh the ruck and f scored amidst great 'ch.ering. Tutere » missed with the kick. South 8 point., ' North 7, and the whistle Immediately I sounded no side. For the winners the j full-back played really splendidly, and is worth watching as a successor to j Gorman if needs bs. M'Donneil wns the best of the three-quarters, 1 running and kicking splendidly! Ur. Reed 1 does not kick or take the ball well enoußh for a centre he improvod a lot towards the finish, passing and rnnnlng well. Smith has the doctors weakness, 1 bub seems a strong and fast runner, he \ had vtry few opportunities. Tutere played a very defensive game, and deserves great kudos. The forwards were a fairly even lob, and babbled really well, especially towards the end of the game, F. Reed is a clinking forward, and led several dribbling rushes right down the ground. Young Morgan was particularly smart at times, and had a big share iv bobh tries, bnt be rather seemed to wolb for openings. Knowlam played a big game, In fact all tho forwards worked really conscientiously right through. Ib was a treat to see the quiet and orderly game they played. For the North Coghlan at fall was fairly good. Welsman ab three-qnarter ditto ditto. Lswb at centre played a good same, collaring and kicking well. Hipassing was bad. Caldwell was an indifferent three - quarter, and not close enough. Donnelly did not show np as well as usual, but O'Connell wbb the cause, for on receiving a piss from Donnelly he would rush back Into the scram with it instead of passing out. This was one of the chief reasons the game was so slow. Chadwick was the bright particular star among tbe forwards. Cheer ran him close, Matheson was clever and qr.ick ab passing. Geordine grafted really hard. Jago wns nob fo brilliant as usual, The same csn be said of Swan. Woodwood was in the first flight all bhe time, and is a really fine forward. Mr Cowell (with exception of the caso mentioned above) gave great satisfaction. To sum up : V. Reed, Tutere, and M'Doonell should go in the representative team, and Morgan, Know fay, and Irvine deserve looking after. Tho win of tho visitors was extremely popular.
