WAIPAWA.

(FEOII OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) January 24, 1895. The amalgamated Band of Hope and town children's picnic at Kaikora yesterday was a great success in every way, the weather being splendid. There was a plentiful supply of choicest edibles of all descriptions, and the mothers, children, and married and single adults mustered in great force, and enjoyed themselves fully. The occasion wus the lesnlb of a very hearty and epoataneous movement by all in the township. They determined to give the children a picnic, and carried out the idea with tbe greatest enthusiasm. Under the persuasive influence of the yonng ladiea' committee, the young men bled freely. The committee comprised the Mifses Duncan, Clark, Taylor, and Mnndell. The Key. J. J. Pendray and Mrs Pendray, Mr J. N. Dndds, Mr A. and Mrs Dodds, Mr and Mrs Ulcks, were Indefatigable in promoting the general happiness. A. social in the Rechablte Hall at night brought the occasion to a successful close. The hall w&b filled, and a pleasant evening was passed. Songs and recitations were given by the members of the Band of Hope, and refreshments were again served out in plenty. The Key. Mr Pendray presided, and pronounced it the most hearty picnic he had ever assisted at. Mr Parkinson's son is getting on all right) from the results of tbe late accident. I learn that I was In error in saying he fell on bis head, and that the latter organ is uDiDJured, but in falling ho struck against tbe wheel or some other projection, which out one tide of the head and ear very badly. A wou'd-be olever person has given it out that be can evade the Act and keep open on Wednesday afternoons because he sellß stamps ! To-day on looking over a paper pnblished Sonth of this I saw a paragraph stating in effect that the Shop Hours Act made this exemption. A careful examination of the Act shows that no such provision exibtH, and ib will bo just as well if shopkei'pf rs will obey tbe Act and nob try to evade ib. There is ono matter that is apparently misunderstood, that is worth noting. Shops outside a city, borough, or town district are not compelled to cljso, bub under the Act in such case all shop assistants and assistants iv hotel bars shall have a halfhollduy on some working day in the week from 1 p.m. This applies to Waipnkurau, lakapan, and Norsewood in this district.
