WELLINGTON REGATTA.

WELLINGTON, TUBSUay. The srjnnal regatta under the ansplcea ~«*-liaeiPo"»t Nicholson Yacht Clnb was held to-day, and proved to be one of the moat successful gatherings in the history of the dab. Daring the forenoon there was nob a breath cf wind, the water In the harbor being like glasi>, and when the can was fired, at 11 o'clock, to start the boats in the Bret class event, the fleet lay almost motionless off the wharf. Within half an hour, however, a light sontherly breeze sprang np and continued through out the rest of the day. This snited the amaller craft admirably, bub was far from satisfactory to the larger boats, notably the competitors engaged in the first class eveiit. The win of the VVaitangl in the Mg event waa very popular, and Logan, bet builder, who steered her Id the race, received a great ovation ss he crossed the line at the finish, the enthusiasm beiDg renewed when the Rons, the winner of the second-clasß championship, which was also bnllt by Logan, drew np alongside the Waitangi, and the two boats sailed away together to their moorings. It was very evident that the wiod was far too light to allow of the Mascotte showing the excellent sailing qualities she ud- — doubtedly possesses. The sailing of the Napier boat in the second-class race was very much admired, and regret was expressed that she conld not be awarded ' first money. It is understood that she is under offer to a Wellington syndicate, her owner being, desirons of securing a larger boat. The following are the particulars of the principal events :— First-class Championship Yacht Race, five rating and over ; firet prize £100 and the commodore's cup; 'second £20; distance obont 27 knots.— Mr K. Logan's (Auckland) Waitangi, 10 rating (6mln 383 ec), 1 ; Mr James Sinclair's (Lyttelton) | Mascotte, 14 rating (scratch), 2 j Mr M. Millar's (Lyttelton) Pastime, 5 rating (lOmiu 30see), 3 j Mr George Mees' (Wellington) Montane, 13 rating (lmln 24sec), i. All the boats came up to the flagship with their kltea on, the Marltana and the two Lyttelton yachts carrying club topsails, and the Ancklander the ordinary jib header. The Marltana was away the first on crossing the Hoe. She was as far np to windward aa she could get, and hoisting her big balloon jib she soon cleared the flagship. The Pastime, with her owner at the helm, was close behind, having crossed - the line only 25 seconds after the firing of the gnu, and ehe also sent up her balloon jib, as did the Waitangi, which got a very bad start owing to Mr Logan, who was sailing her, being determined that she shonld be well inside the line. The Ancklander lost 3min 55>ec in getting away, and the Mascotte, whioh is usually smart at starting, was even worse, being 4mln 6sec bebiDaV Pastime tore along at a great rate when she felt the southerly, and soon displaced the Maritana, which was last. When the boats disappeared from view round Point Halswell, about four miles from the Queen's wharf, the Waitangi was second two minutes behind , tbePastlme, and a similar distance in front of the M ascot te. On the beat to Woraer's j Bay the Waitangi exhibited splendid pace, and overhauling the Pastime assnmed a strong lead, the Mascotte also coming no and passing the Pastime on the ran to the buoy. 03 Petone the "WaltftDgi Increased her lead, while the <eMarltana slightly improved her position. , "^ The first round was completed as follows : —Waitangi, lhr 57mln 6Oaeo ; Maocotte, >2hr Omin ; Maritana, 2hr ISmin 6aec ; Pastime, 2br lOmin. On tbo inn to Woraer Bay lor the second time the Weitangi increased her lead by abont sis minutes, and sailing splendidly orossed the line an easy winner at 4hra 69mln 52*ec. The Mascotte, who was three or four miles behind her, finished at shrs 27min 2fhec. Tbe Pastime and tho Maritana finished close together shortly before Ux o'clock,: the former having the advantage. f The Second class Championship Yacht Race, two and a half rating and under five, first prize £50 and trophy, second £10 ; distance, about 20 knots.— Mr A.
