THE HALF-HOLIDAY.

Wellington, Monday

At a meeting of the conference of delegates on the half-holiday question Mr Lake, Mayor of Wellington, and Mr Bayliss, delegate for Melrcwe, were proposed as chairmen. Mr Lnke declined to vote, and there were four for each. The city solicitor was called In, and gave his opinion that Mr Lnke mast vote, whereupon he gave his voice tor Mr Bayllss. The latter bad no sooner taken the chair and letters been read notlfyiag the appointment of delegates, than Mr Haroonrt attacked the legality of Mr Bayllss's appointment, stating that he had been informed that ho was appointed by the Public Works Committee of Melrose, and not by the Conncil. The chairman said they had beard the letter read notifying bis appointment, Mr Harconrt protested, and a*ked the chairman to say distinctly whether he had been properly appointed. The chairman declined to say more than he had done. Mr Harconrt said this was an important matter, and would probably lead to a law-suit. If anything not in order took place as far as he was aware tbe matter would be taken by those interested to tbe Snprerae Court. lie suggested that the meeting should be adjourned to enable tbe Melrose Conncil, which meets on Wednesday, to properly eleot a delegate. If this had not been done the conference wonld have been adjourned till Monday. It b nnderstood that if tbe conference remains as ut present constituted the decision will be in favor of Wednesday.
