ANOTHER BATHING ACCIDENT AND PLUCKY RESCUE.

On Saturday afternoon a very narrow escape from drowniug occurred at the port by the end of the eastern pier at the entrance to the harbor. Here in a clean sheltered cook is a favorite resort for young girls bathing, and on Saturday afternoon a few were so engaged. One of them, Misa Nellie Frebble, daughter of Mr John Prebble, got beyond her depth and getting exhausted by her struggles could not gain land through the force of the backwash. One of her companions perceiving the peril cried for help, a ciy which was luckily heard by a young lad named John Palmer, who was fishing on the pier some distance away. He made haste to the rescue, and slipping oft his coat plunged into the sea and was toon aside Miss Prebble. He was fortunately able to get hold of the drowning girl just in time, and succeeded in bringing her ashore alive, where she was attended to by others who had arrived on tbe scene, and after n little time taken to her home. The lad who so gallantly rescued her in named John Palmer, ope 14, and a eon of Archdeacon Palmer, of the Melaneaian diocese. He and his brother Harry were landed from the missionary yachtSon them Cross a few days eince here to pick up tho s.o. Waihora and go on to Auckland, and from there to Wanganul, where they ate to be placed at the college for their further education. His father will be proud and pleased to learn of his son's gallant behaviour bo soon after his entry to New Zealand. The youngster is a native of Norfolk Island. Mr John Prebble, the father of the rescued yonDg lady, waited on the the young gentleman on Saturday evening and expressed to him the depth and fervency of bis gratitude.
