BUSH NEWS.
(VROM AN OCCASIONAL CORRESPONDENT.) J Ashley Cliaton.— The purchase of a new engine has enabled Mr Bjgnall to lecommence woik nt his sawmi'l in the viciuity of Ashley- Clinton . This imparts an air of life into the place which it otherwise lacked. - The engine cuts from 4000 to 6000 feet of timbjr per day, and as there are over 100 acres of bush to ontont, local settlers will be benefited for some time to come. Besides giviDg employment at mill work, the fact of having timber a) near at hand will lea source of satisfaction to the settlers engaged in bnildiog on their various sections. Timber has been obtained both at Norsewood and Tikoklno for the Blackbnm district. From either place the coat of carriage is no light item of expense, as the distance is so great, Blackburn.— The country is presenting its usual emerald appearance for thin season of the year, Twlc lambi being very numerous and thriviug, despite the trying weather, is a cheering sight to the bush settler who has had anything bnt a happy time this winter, with sickness and wet weather combined. There are also reports of triplet?. In one or two instances the third lamb has not survived the cold and exposure daring the lattfew days,— Travelling up the Blackburn ridge road and past the valley quite a large number of new and comiortable buildings are observable. The bush huts and old whares will soon be a thing of the past in this distrisr. which present? quite a prosperous appearance. One of the prettiest views of river ecenery is obtainable from the ridge, where the Tuki Tuki bisecting the valley winds its silvery way through luxuriant bush clad bonks, aliove the sections wbcto the burnt and! charred trees and logs make the contrasb more conspicnous, Makaretu. —At Makoretu affairs appear quiet. The Mutual Improvement Society hold socials as of yore. New membeis are solicited. They have a good opportunity for displaying their oratorical powers. Onpa Onsa,— An orchestral society has been formed in this little place. The members give a concert soon.
