EXPORT RETURNS.
' Not many years ago Napier figured sixth or seventh in the list of exporting towns. Then it gob to be fifth, and most people expected it to remain there. But accord- , ing to figures published in the Trade I Xcviwj kst year it waa third if we deduct |re exports and specie. Lyttelton headed | the list with £1,821,104, Wellington comI ing next with £1,303,621, Napier third : with £1,158,022, .Dunedln fourth with I £1,132,780, and Auckland fifth with' £1,127,913. Duuediu's exports include gold to the value of £330,000, apart from which her exports were only £822,090. Of Auckland's total no less than £703,000 ia represented by gold and kauri gum, leaving leas than £510,000 (apart from specie) for other merchandise. So, if we take only agricultural and pastorai pro. ducts, Napier's position is relatively even much better than it appears in the totals. Aud yet we have heard kind friends from Auckland and Wellington wonder why we want a harbor here I
