HASTINGS.

(FROM ODR OWN CORRFSPONDENT.) August 31, 1592. Mr Huat nnd tbo members of the Choral and Orchestral Society nro to be congratulated on tho Rucccssful concert which they gave last night. I regret that tho crowded state of yonr columns and the length of tho programme preclude more '.ban the following summary :— Tho choruses, especially "Onward to H.ittle," were Riven with great f-pirit and precision, although here nod there {e.g. in "Stars of the Summer Night") the ringer* seumed hardly to realise as fully as their iustrnctor wi;lie>l the value of " pinuu " iv some pawnees. The inatrumentnl pieces went very well, nnd in some passages the alternations of Mr Dennett's lluto and Mr George's cornet had a very plea«ing effect. The latter in bia solo, " Fra Poco," fully sn-t'iincd his reputation as a cornet player. Mm Mllly Lee's violin solos were as usual a strong feature in tho programme, the delicacy of tone in her " Keverie d'Amour" and her rapid stoppinp and bowing in the variationK on " The ]?lue Hells of Scotland " drawing lorth loud applause. The phno and organ duet " Triumph March" by Messrs Spackman and Hunt was lull of fine effects. Ine'eed the pleasure of the evening was much enhanced by Mr Spnckmnn's pluyiuj» and Mrs Spademan's tinging, her rendering of "The Old Harpsichord " being characterised by feeling and delicacy, nil a simile of which was loat in the judinou? piano and violin accompaniment hy Messrs Hunt and Spackman, In iespon s e to an inevit.'ib.'e. encore she pave "Yp Banks and Hr.io," which drew further [>Inui)it.->. Mi»s A. Stevens, in addition to doing good nervicu us an accompanist, pang " The Old Lock " with groat tnst<> and commendable clearness of articulation, She, liko Miss Colliuge, contented licraelf with bowing ia response to well desprvi d encores. Miss Collmge's song, "Tin 1 I/and of my Heart," was s-ung with much i-x|ivs>ion. Mr Hunt's forp, "The King.- Own," met with such an linrorfttivc encore tlw.t he. had to respond with "B'.illlo!" Mr J, A. Fr.uer n always happy in the. choice of his S'ln; I *, and -.mi; with grout "piiit Judu's " Hume, liny.-, Home ! '' n .-nldicr'a song with a goii'l :-'.\iuging chorus. " God Save the Q'leen " cunniided a very pleaBant evening.- cnter<niii:nent. While mi ni.ttteisiim-ie.il I wou'il ask " Why will i.oi amateur Mtigers trill their r'B';" They havn no :di a how they would gain both in voice production and articulation by so doing. Further, I would expre"s the hope that more of our Hastings folk will join the Choral and Orchestral Society, muMc being a ground on which nil cl.isfces c.lll meet in common to the grout plea'-nre of both performers and the public. Jn France tho opbeomstes recruited from all ranks (chiefly from the provinces) managed to (-end a splendid choir to the Crjstnl Palace, where their concerts were crowded Except as far as numbers go thtre H no reasju why our people frbmiM Ijb less cultivated. A well-attended meeting wus held last night ut St. P.il rick's schoolroom for the parnose of otubhihing a Literary Club. Father Smythf, wlm was in the chair, introduced tlm subject with a tnw remarks (iv fie ftdv.iii'nyi'n, especially to the yo'.ng, of good pure enttrtuinlng and ius'ructive re.ii-iiig, bringing out the poiut that the mind, like the body, must be ftd, and that if the food were un« hole, some tljo ndnd would be poisoned, as the boy wbh by dis-n.if.ed foud. After Fome discussion il wan resolved, " That, a club to be called the ' Ha-tings Catholic Literary Club' be formed, and that a library be attached to it." The following officers were elected:— Pre Ident, Father Smytbe'j vice president, Mr J. Cullen ; treasurer, Mr Klwood ; lion. Focii'tnry, Mr (J. Vickcr? ; librarians, Mi".»in (!. VicUers nud P. M'Malion ; committee, Messrs Eln-nod, P. M'Carthy, and W. 15. O'lirien. The meeting closed with a vote of ibankt to the ebtiirmau. r i i
