THE KAIKORA HOUSEHOLDERS' MEETING.
Bib, — I was amused in reading your report of the householders in the Kaikora district. The only man that offered any ructions was the chairman himself. — I am, &c, Householder. April 27, 1892, GOVERNMENT RELIEF WORKS. Sin,— You say that if the conntry gets value for the mouey paid there is much to commend in Mr Seddon's tchetuo, And thflp you blame him becaui-e one lot ot navvies are able to make lOi per day on a job while auother lot of untrained men aro only able to make 2* per Hny. Of course, as that contractor xairi about the men, he would only pick snme 30 of the men on thu job, and let the others fio, and he was qnito right from his point of view. Snch men cannot afford to take inferior workmen, and to teach them their work. They want the best men only, and to push the work to an end quickly. Bat whon there is a scheme to find work for the unemployed it U jn>t such poor fellows who are only worth 2s p«r dny on a job thnt linvn to be conBitlprecl. Mmy ot them arc nsrd to other work, hnt cannot net it, and if they are williup to work for 2s per day contract work, ami if they give value to the full extent to satisfy the overseer, who has a right to grumble? Not yon, Mr Editor, for yon commend that very plan at the beaiDtiing of tlio article. The overeeers nre mostly fairly good men, and able to know what work is or should be done, and they always should be good men, nnd then when the works come to be measured up, the Government will get their full 2s worth from tho poor beggars that are worth no more (ill they lenrn to ivnrk the long handled "fiddle.""— I am, I've., John Petkhson. Napier, Apiil 27, 1592, P.S.— There ia owe thing about Dick Seddon that any one knows who knows him, that he knows about work too well togiveJO s a day to a man who is only worth two bob, but he is a good fellow and will find work if possible, and it it pays the country to fiud the work.
