WAIPAWA.

(from our own correspondent,) February 1, 1892. If what I hear is correct tho further hearing on Thursday of the application by •Mr J. Mathews for certificates in regard to certain shares in a lease of Manawatu No. 3 (Te Ohu), is likely to prove very interesting. On Friday Mr Lozell Baw two rabbits chased by a hound come into town near Corskie'B smithy, and this morning one of them was caught by Mr R, Pellow's dog. It was about three-quarters grown, and brown in color, It is said that someone is breeding them within 100 miles from Waipawa. I learn that working of the Piripiri block is prevented by the refusal of the Railway Commissioners to allow a siding to bo put in. The ground of refusal is that ib is too close to Mangatora, but they ore doubtless not aware that the Mangatera stream intervenes, which running in a deep gorge would require a very costly bridge over it. To cart all the firewood, posts, and timber produced on the block to Mangatera would be so expensive that Jt would leave no profit to tbe owners, who ure ready to pub on from 60 to 100 men if allowed to put in a siding at their own cost. Tho proposed site is the level clearing where the road crosses on the north eastern sido of Piripiri. The question ot firewood supply will soon be a serious and pressiog one, if, as I am 'informed, it takes 100 trucks weekly to snpply the Tomoina freezing works and 60 for Waipukuraa, without reckoning private customers at Napier, Hastings, and elsewhere. Tho report of the county hospital for the week ending 30th January snows that thero 'are 22 male and two female patients; six males have been received during the week, and seven males discharged ; one male died. A tennis tournament between Waipawa and the Plains took place on Friday lost at the residence of Mr H. H. Bridge, at Ashcott. Tho following is on abstract of the play : — Doubles : Thprnton and Lougbnan (Waipawa) beat S. Bridge and E. White (Plains) 6-3, 1 6-4. Adeane and F. White (Plainß) beat H. White and Howard (Waipawa) 6-0, 6-2. Wilson and Stonewig (Plains) beat Godfrey and H. Rathbone (Waipawa) 6—1, 1-6. 6-2. Misses C. and M. Bibby (Wnipawa) beat' the Misses Herrick (Plains) 6-3, 6-5. Singles : Thornton beat E. White 6-4, 4_6, 6—3. Lougbnan beat Adeane 6—2, 7-5. S. Bridge beat H. White 8-4, 4_o, o-3. Wilson beat Godfrey 6-3, 6-3. F. White beat Howard 6-2, 6-2, Stonerig beat U. Rathbone 6—3, 6-5. The Plains therefore won by four sets. The day was dull but tine, and onr Waipawa friends enjoyed a very pleasant outing. The Trust Commissioner will investigate the following transactions on 3rd Febrnary :— Lease of Pnketapu No. 1 to H. Campbell, by Horomona Pnketapu j lease of Knimotumotu south reserve to H. R. Russell, by Inia Whangatano nnd others ; conveyanco of Turnmo No. 2 to Hugh Campbell, by Horoui Puhl ; con veyance of Turamoe No. 2 ta G. P. Gaisfnr.l, by Horomi te Hapukn j transfer of Wbenuaban D. E. to W. Nelson, by Te Otinn te Rcina. On Bth February the Oomuii'3'ioner will deal with tho following c.«i's :— Lease of Manawatu No. 3 to Thomas SUey, by Hepe te Apitu ; re lease and conveyance of Ohikakarewa to Rank of New Zealand' Estates Company, by Henare Tomoana,; release and conveyance of same to same by Albert Karailiunn t tiansfer of Poran No. 2 to L. Higgins, by Te Amopo te Arina. A meeting of the County Hospital committee was held on Saturday when Mr W. C. Smith was elected chairmon for (ho year oi tbe motion of Messrs Groom nnd Ilaiding. It was resolved on tho motion i.f Mr Smith lhat the secretary forward a letter of condolence to Mrs Mackersey tettifylug tho Board's appreciation of the services of their late chairman, who had been connected with tho institution sinca its formation. The Boatd also resolved to place on record their approval of the way in which the hnspitil was conducted ; also that in cases of delirium tremens the admission to the hospital be left ts the discretion of Dr. Reed. This arose in consequence of a man named Brosnahan, who a short lime ago paid an enforced visit to your city. I was shown to-day a copy of the Egmont Star dated 1819. This is a fact, although that district has not been nettled qnite as long.
