AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL SOCIETY.

The committee of the Agricultural and Pastoral Society transacted a considerable meeting, which was well attended. There were present Messrs FitzKoy (in the obair), llussell, Coletuan, Gakford, Lnckio, C. Drown, Heslop, 0. Hunter, A. M'Hardy, Beilby, N. Kettle, and I{, Smith. A circular from the Stock Department, Wellington, wan read, asking the committee to express their views on tha question of licensing stallions in tha colony, and stating that the Government - # intended legislating on the subjectAfter some discussion tbe following resolution was moved by Mr Coleman, seconded by Mr Gaiafor j, and carried : - " That this committee affirms the principle laid down by a resolution passed in May. 1889, of imposing a fee of £10 upon all entire horses within the district of the age of three years old and upwards ; the fees to be collected by the Sheep Inspector's Department, and all preminms so collected to bo offered as prizes to all sire horses at an annual competition' subject to any regulations that may be made lor the purpose." ' A letter was read from Mr A. C. Lang, inquiring on behalf a large Southern breeder of sheep if the committee would allow sheep coming to jthe show by dtoamer to have covers on' them to keep their wool free from dirt, &c., and also if light calico coverings would be allowed on sheep intended tor competition at tbe show, to keep their fleeces clear of dock and thistle seeds, &c— lt was resolved that light calico coverings be allowed on all sheop coming to tbe show, whether by steamer, rail, or road, provided such coverings aro used whilst in " actual transit only," but that no coverings of any Idnd would be allowed on sheop intended to bo shown at any other time prior to \ the show.— During the disoussioD, Mr M -.oleman intimated that next year he in- -■* -ended to propose that exhibitors should be allowed to show their sheep without any restrictions as to clothing er housing. A post card was received from the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Socioty stating that the resolution of the Hawke's Bay Society re the oppoi&tmend of a Chief Inspector of Stock for tho colony would be brought before the next meeting of the committoe to beheld on theUthMay. . ■ •:;i..;.-.' the stock department since the office of Chief Inspector for the colony was abolished. —It was moved by Mr M'Hardy, and seconded by Mr Gaisford, and earned, "That a letter be sent to the Minister of Lands inquiring if it is the intention of the Government to appoint a sub-inspector of sheep for Hawke s Bay, as this society is of opinion that the provisions of tho Act cannot be carried out effectually unless such appointment is mado." Mr John Heslop, who is looked upon as the father of the society, sent a message to the oommittee to the effect that though he had hoped to have been able to be present at this meeting, he felt scarcely strong enough to take snch a long journey at present, bnt that he hoped to meet the committee again at the next meeting, a wish which was unanimously reciprocated by all present. It was resolved that the annual meeting of the society be held ou the sth June.
