The Government have informed the Commissioners that the railways must bo made to. pay, and that therefore the train mileago must bo reduced, The proportion of staff to mileage must also be reduoed, and younger men, skilled in the constrution of cheap lines, must be appointed to the positions of Ungineer-in-Chiet and engineers of existing lines. The trial of Johnston, late stock and station agent, at Ballarat, for tho murder of his wife and lour children, lsc included. The jury brought in a verdict of wilful murder against Johunton. The evident given duripg the trial showed that Johu-
ston, under great* pressure, gave the manager of the bank in which he kepi his account a cheque for £6800 in pay ment of certain liabilities, It was alterwards discovered that the cheque ■ was a forgery, but the friend whose same Johnston forged honored it.
A man named Bourke has been sen-: fenced to death for the murder of a fellow prisoner in the Hamilton gaol.
