WAIPAWA.

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] April 11, 1889. The rain still keeps off, and the lorely sunny days are all being wasted, as the earth is parched and the grass is all dead. The Masonic Lodge last night decider! to vote in favor of a United Grand Lodge for New Zealand. Has not this idea sprung into life since it was known Hint Lord Onslow was a Mason of high de"reo, think you ? If that is so. then I think it a mistake that a United Grand Lodge should be formed, so to speak, to offer the , chair of Master to the new Governor. _ The people of Waipukurau are delighted. ISelson Bros, are about to erect, freezing works there, and that will mean the employment of a great number of hands, and give a fillip to the business of the place. The " model village " badly needed something of the kind. The Nelsons will henceforth be remembered in the prayers of those who pray for " the good of this place." , A spasmodic effort is being made by one or two for the purpose of raising funds . for the public library. Put into plain English this is just begging, and that of a paltry kind, and the worst of it is that • folks will be found foolish enough to subscribe, s) that a room may be kept open and papers supplied to a lot of loafers, who will not pay a penny towards the * support of the institution, but who will fate good care to enjoy the newspapers, light, and fire supplied by charity. The getting together of a few pounds in this Way means a little more cheap popularity for one or two local politicians— save the / '■ mark ! Dear me, how they do help the : working man, to be sure— with other beople's money ! - - All Monday next there will be a school holiday, and all the children of this place and its surronndine are invited to be "present at a picnic promoted by the U.M.F. Sunday-school and the Band of Hope. - The inspector made his surprise visit to-day, and wiu at the school for some .- hours. He was quite delighted with all he saw' and the results obtained while J ~ present! "The following is his entry in the " logbook," and as it is a complete answer in itself to all that has been said against our school I forward it to you tor , insertion :— " This school, under Mr , Williamson's management, continues in ' working order, and high results '"are 'promised at the next examination of the school. The teaching throughout is. methodical, the discipline admirable, and the teachers are doing their work with. 1 diligence and much care. . All 1 the school records have been kept in accordance with r, department requirements. The buildings are in excellent order and repair, and the rooms, grounds, and out-offices are ex- . . ceptionally clean and tidy. The infants' department, under Miss Kosie, continues to give great satisfaction. .Nnmber on the roll : Males 130, females 130, total 266. v Number present : Males UO3, female? W, total 217.
