NEW SOUTH WALES.

(Received April 10, 1.15 p.m.) Sydney, Wednesday. The agricultural returns for New South Wales show a falling-off dnring the year ended Mnreh 31st, 1889, compared wirh the previous year as follows : — Wheat, 8,245,425 bushels; maize, 41,121 bushels; liarley, 47,824 bushels ; oats, 283,846 bushels ; hay, 78,484 tons ; lucerne aiid sown grasses, 177 tons ; potatoes, 23,981 tons ; sugar cane, 163,690 tons. The Legislative Assembly last night passed a resolution by 45 to 25 approving the payment of members. The motion to remove the timber duties was rejected by 60 to 6. (Received April 11, i a.m.) In the Assembly this evening the Hon. W. M'Mjllan, Colonial Treasurer, delivered his financial statement. The honorable gentleman said that the Government did not intend to interfere with the existing tariff at present, but that next session he (the Colonial Treasurer) would submit proposals for simplifying the tariff with a view to making it as nearly a Freetrade tariff as was possessed by any_ country in the world, and at the same time he would present a scheme of direct taxation, No duties would be removed till the House had assented to the new taxation. The deficit stood at £1,680,236. There was also a defloit of £37,000 from last year. The estimates of revenue and expenditure for the year 1889 as made by the Hon. Mr Burns in the last statement presented to the House would still hold good. Mr M'Millan said further that the Government expected a credit balance at the end of the financial year of £25,192.
