RECLAIMING THE SWAMP.

Sir,— Does Mr Rocbfort mean to say that "pleasnre boats,," &c, would not be feasible because, digging a hole would raise the water level of the swamp ? He shows there is a clear fall of eight inches to the mile at low water. Surely there is not much engineering difficulty in making water run down hill ! In the district of Holderness the natural water-courses flow tfrom the sea, and before the principles of drainage were well undeistood [produced an extensive swamp in the anterior. Within the last 130 years that 'difficulty has been overcome by cutting -cauals which discharge into the tidal rivers by means of self • acting tidaldoors, and the swamp has been converted into valuable land. The levels are so dead in some parts of the district that permanent fences are made of the water by subdividing the paddocks with drains. Yet the water runs as the Calliope got out of Apia, slowly but surely. —l am, &c, W.F. April 5, 1889.
