FOOTBALL.
s. 1 So far as Hawke's Bay is concerned the ' football season opened practically on Saturday, when two cup matches were played — County v. Te Ante at Hastings, and Pirates v. Harriers in town. The former game was interesting from the fact that the County team included Messrs Joseph, William, and Fred. Warbrick, J. Taiaroa, W. and G. Wynyard, Stewart, and Webster, 'of Mr J. Warbrick's representative native team, all these pla3 r ing for the County dob. Id the town contest the teams wera regarded as very, evenly matched, and a close game was expected. At Hastings the ground was extremely rough and the grass high, and during the greater part of the time rain fell. The Napier clubs were more fortunate, as they had nothing but a fresh breeze to afflict them.
